Essential oil use with kids can be tricky with dilution and what can and cannot be used so I am here to break it down for you!
See our daily oil use HERE.
I thought I would share exactly how we use essential oils with Dominic and to help you decide what can be used for your kids!
I just want to start out by saying I am not a doctor and I am not here to tell you exactly how and what you should use with your kids. You are the parent so use your judgement and do your own research! I am just here to explain how our family uses essential oils with our kids!
I use Young Living’s Essential Oils so that is what I will be sharing today. I cannot speak for other brands and how they work with kiddos so please just look into the oils that you are using and how to use them with children.
I will admit I was nervous at first to use essential oils with Dominic because I didn’t know much about them and their uses. After joining Young Living and being added to the amazing FB groups we have, I learned A TON! Our FB groups have a wealth of information about essential oil use with kids. I have also done my own research to see which ones I want to use with Dominic and how to use them with him.
WHAT OILS WE USE WITH DOMINIC
We pretty much diffuse any oil in our living room around Dominic. Our living room is open to the playroom, entry way, dining room, stair way, and kitchen so the circulation is really good. I haven’t noticed Dominic having any adverse reaction to any oils I have diffused around him. When diffusing oils around kids, if they have a reaction, just turn off the diffuser and don’t diffuse those certain oils around the kids.
However, we don’t diffuse just any oil in his nursery! I stick to Gentle Baby, Lavender, SleepyIze, and Peace and Calming. I only use 1-2 drops and set the diffuser to the intermittent setting so it’s on for 1 minute and then off for 1 minute. It helps soothe him and sets the tone for his bedtime routine.
Topically, I apply SleepyIze to his neck before bedtime and naptime. Young Living has an entire kids line called KidScents that is already diluted so that you can apply it to your children and diffuse it around kiddos, so AMAZING! I also created an immunity roller for him that is diluted much more than John Paul and I’s immunity roller. Get the recipe HERE.
I will sometimes add drops of lavender to Dominic’s bath if his skin is very dry. It helps to calm and soothe the skin. It’s also great for right before bedtime to help him relax.
For the new baby, I will diffuse oils in small amounts at first to see how she reacts. I will use less drops while diffusing oils. I have heard amazing things about putting Gentle Baby on your chest and snuggling the baby to help calm them down so I am excited to try that out when she is fussy.
You are going to want to dilute essential oils when applying them topically to kids. Here is a helpful dilution chart that I follow or you can do your own research to see how to dilute based on your child’s age.
We have also overhauled a lot of our cleaning and household products so that we have safer products for us all. We now use Thieves Household Cleaner to clean every surface of our home. We no longer use anything else except for Thieves. It is safe for kids and pets!
We wash all of our clothes with Thieves Laundry Detergent. This includes all of baby girl’s clothes that have to be washed before she wears them. It is toxin free so perfect to use on all the kiddo’s clothes.
Lastly, we use Thieves hand soap and dish soap. Both are chemical free and safe to use around children. Think of all the kid’s dishes you do and all the chemicals in the soaps you are using that are left on the ‘clean dishes!’ When I thought of it this way, I knew I had to make a switch!
This lifestyle change has been something we have done over time and something I have become very passionate about. It is important to me that I am reading labels and understanding the products that I bring into the house.
Using essential oils around Dominic has been very beneficial for him from sleep support to wellness support to emotional support. I plan to use oils around our daughter when she is born as well!
