I’ve come up with a list of tips I use for spring time and house plants. I find that my plants start to really grow a lot more come spring and I like to take extra care to enable as much new growth as possible. These tips are just some things that I have found to be helpful when it comes to house plants and I hope they help you too!

PLANTS TIPS FOR SPRING

  • Trim/Prune: I like to really examine my plants and trim back any dead leaves/stems that may be left behind from winter. I like to prune back any leggy looking plants to help facilitate bigger and fuller growth

  • Up the watering: I find that my plants like to drink a bit more during springtime and heading into summer. I don’t necessarily add any more days of watering, but I will give them a bigger drink of water when I do water them. I don’t go too crazy, but a bit more than during the winter as we have a lot more sunlight now so the plants can tolerate a bit more water

  • Rotate: I like to rotate my plants and make sure they are getting the right sunlight. Sometimes I will move plants closer to windows during the winter since there isn’t as much natural light. During the spring, I will move the plants around so that they don’t burn from all the sunlight. This may just mean moving them back a bit or changing the location all together. I don’t want to shock my plants with a new location, so usually just moving them back a bit from the window is sufficient

  • Repot: During the spring is a good time to repot, if needed. Spring is usually when plants will start to grow a lot so I will check my plants to see if any are in need of repotting. Repotting can be done at any time, but I think spring is good time before they really hit their growth spurts in the summer. To determine if a plant needs to be repotted, I look at the bottom of the pot to see if any roots are growing out of it. I also check the top to see if roots are coming out from the top. Lastly, I look at the plant to see if it is too top heavy for the pot.

  • Fertilize: I will fertilize using my Thieves cleaner. There are lots of fertilizers you can use, but I find that my Thieves cleaner is great for giving my plants an extra boost. I tend to do this year round, but spring is a good time to get your plants on a healthy track.
