Plans for the Backyard

Thank you to Fox Pest Control for sponsoring this post. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

We have big plans for our backyard, but first thing we had to do was have our home serviced by Fox Pest Control to make sure we were set for the spring.

I’m excited to work on our backyard and to share with you all of the plans and goals we have for it!

We moved into this house in August last year so we never experienced a spring here until this year. We cleaned up the yard in the Fall in preparation for spring by raking, pruning, and trimming some trees and bushes. We didn’t go too crazy because we didn’t know what would come up in the spring so we were extra cautious.

PREVENTATIVE CARE

Our first order of business, before doing much to the yard was to get a quarterly treatment from Fox Pest Control. We don’t want any unwanted pests in our home so we figured it was best to start now before pest season is in full force! Fox Pest Control came to our house and they were so nice, friendly, and professional. They explained everything that they were doing and asked if we had any problematic areas that we wanted them to check out. They sprayed the entire perimeter of our home, our deck, our shed, and the entire basement perimeter. They checked for any cracks and crevices and took down any spider webs they saw.

Fox Pest Control is locally operated. Here is the number for the Rochester location that we used: (585) 684-8366. They use products that are kid and pet safe which is amazing! Since they sprayed our house a few weeks ago, we haven’t seen many pests! Since our family room is at ground level, we would tend to get some bugs and we haven’t had any lately, which is so nice!

I’m so glad we got this treatment now in preparation for the upcoming warmer months. With the kids being outside more, it gives us some peace of mind knowing we have a little preventative care for unwanted bugs or rodents! We are looking forward to our next treatment!

TOUR OF THE YARD

I think the easiest way to share our plans is to give you a little tour of the backyard! We have already been working away in our yard, but it has some work that still needs to get done!

On the left of the deck, we plan to mulch around the lilac tree and big bush. We want to put down some white rocks on the pathway to clean it up a bit more.

Around the shed, we will add mulch and try to clean up the shed as best we can. The shed will probably need to be replaced in a few years.

We have already started mulching the back garden space. This was a huge mess before we started the mulch. We cleaned it all up, raked, put down the black weed barrier, and started mulching. There was an old debilitated compost bin that we took down which was a huge eye sore and would not have been functional anymore. We have to finish putting mulch down, adding the white rocks, and the edging rocks. Our plan is to put a few potted flowers in this garden bed. We are also going to be adding a fire pit around this area with some more stones underneath. Can’t wait to share my ideas for that space, soon!

Moving to the back of the yard, we cut down 3 bushes which had unfortunately died. It’s tough because they provided some privacy, but they all were just branches so we took them down and plan to add something different. We also trimmed all of the bushes as the bottoms had tons of dead branches. It looks so much better all trimmed and cleaned. We haven’t decided if we are going to do rocks or mulch, but probably mulch!

On the right side of the yard, we put down mulch in that corner garden. We don’t plan to add much more as it it is pretty complete. I want to see how all of the hostas come in and see if it needs anything else. Plus, I want to see what the tree looks like all bloomed. Along the right side, we put down mulch and raked. We want to add a big pot of flowers with a hanging basket of flowers to the end of the garden bed.

Along the back of our house, we took down all the vines that were growing, cleaned up the moss, raked, and laid down mulch. We are going to add a raised garden box in between the windows to help disguise the wires a bit more. We only get shade in that area so we have to find shady flowers/plants. We plan to put down some grass in the space that is all dirt. We think the previous owner had some sort of garden there as it was like this when we moved in last year.

Lastly, along the deck, we added mulch, a hanging basket and rocks. We may consider adding more rocks along the deck, but haven’t decided yet.

I love doing yard work. It’s so fulfilling to see how a little hard work can really transform a yard. You know I love plants, so planning out our landscaping is so fun for me! It’s also something I am learning a lot about.

We will also be planting some grass. A lot of our yard is covered in shade from the big trees which is great for hot days, but makes growing grass a bit more challenging. We want to try and see what we can do this year and then maybe next year we will hire a professional landscaper to get some grass in here and help control more of the weeds, if we can’t get it up to our liking!

We have to still work on the side yards and the front yard, but we want to finish up the backyard first since it has the most work to be done.
