Our downstairs space is a large open room that we have made into a multifunctional space.

By following these tips, you can learn how to make a space multifunctional!

When we were looking for houses, we knew we would be downsizing from our previous home based on where we wanted to live and the budget that we had. We were completely fine with it as we kind of wanted a smaller home anyways.

Fun fact: I never really wanted a split level as I didn’t think this style of home would function well for our family, however, I was quickly mistaken when we found this house! When we saw this home, we knew that the downstairs space would have to be multifunctional because of how the house was laid out. I knew we could make this downstairs area flow really well AND be used for multiple things.

With the help of pieces from Raymour and Flanigan, we were able to make our family room into the perfect space for us! We had such a great shopping experience with professional help from the entire team at our local showroom. They offer delivery 7 days a week and the delivery team was on time and put the pieces exactly where we wanted them. We love how this room turned out!

TIPS FOR MAKING A SPACE MULTIFUNCTIONAL:

  1. Determine your needs in the space: For us, we wanted to have a living room where we could relax and watch movies together as a family, we needed an office space for John Paul as he is now working from home, a play space for the kids plus storage for toys, and we wanted a cozy spot for my family to retreat to at night when they come to visit. This is kind of a tall order for a wide open space, but with the pieces we chose from Raymour and Flanigan, this was easy to accomplish!

  2. Create zones in the space for each different function: We were able to create little areas in the larger space for each function we wanted. So we have a playroom zone, a living room zone, an office zone, and a guest room zone.

  3. Use coordinating colors, textures, designs to bring the space together: by using coordinating patterns, colors, decor, and furniture, the whole room will flow and feel as one even though you have created zones for each function

MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPACES

Now I want to break down the family room into all the spaces we created and how we easily did it with furniture from Raymour and Flanigan! We LOVE Raymour and Flanigan and have been big fans of the quality of their pieces for years now. They have beautiful furniture that is perfect for any style and budget.

PLAYROOM: We have this little nook in our family room that is perfect for a playroom. I knew it would be great for the kids to play so I wanted to create a space that was fun and cozy. This rocking chair from Raymour and Flanigan is AMAZING! It is so comfortable, so beautiful, and is the perfect chair to read books to the kids on. It fits perfectly in the corner. I love the stripe details and the legs of the chair.

LIVING ROOM: The living room is kind of the main space in the downstairs area. It’s the center of attention and the ‘anchor’ of our downstairs space. This is where we hang out the most to watch the kids play in their play space, watch movies, relax, and lounge. I wanted it to be warm and inviting, but still fit with the more modern vibes of our mid century home. I found this gorgeous sleeper sofa from Raymour and Flanigan. It’s cozy, comfy, and modern. Our whole family can pile on the couch to snuggle up for a movie which is what I love and envisioned for our main sofa! The love seat is kind of a show stopper, in my opinion! It is also from Raymour and Flanigan and it’s such a beauty! I love the legs, the tufted details, and the sleek lines. It’s still very comfortable and it fits perfectly under our window sill. We also found this gorgeous entertainment center from Raymour and Flanigan. I love the dark wood and all the details on the doors. It’s truly a work of art and I think it’s such a statement piece. It is also SO perfect for toy storage. I love that the doors hide toys, games, puzzles and craft supplies. The kids still have access to their toys, but at the end of the day, they can all be cleaned up and put away. It’s also fun to decorate all the shelves! It's sold as just a media console too, which is a nice option!

GUEST ROOM: Although, we don’t have a true designated guest room, we still wanted a space for our family to be able to sleep comfortably in. The sleeper sofa from Raymour and Flanigan is a game changer! It’s so perfect for a space saver! Couch during the day and bed at night!! It folds out to a queen size bed and it’s actually pretty comfortable! I’m excited for my family to have a place to sleep when they come to visit, other than sleeping on a couch!

OFFICE: John Paul is now working from home so we we knew we needed a designated space for him to work. He also has 2 computer screens so we knew it couldn’t just be at the dining room table. We were so happy to have this built in shelving/desk space for him in the family room. It worked out perfectly and he can comfortably work with his new chair from Raymour and Flanigan. It’s very nice, it swivels, and has great support for his back.

I love how all of the pieces coordinate. They are all different shades of gray with some modern and sleek lines. I added some fun, neutral pillows to tie in all the spaces together. I love the dark wood tone of the media console to pop against the lighter walls and accents in the room.

We love Raymour and Flanigan! The showroom and delivery teams were so professional and helpful. Our family room works so well for us and I could not be happier with how it all turned out! It looks so different from when we bought the house and it feels like home! See the before photo below.

We do have more plans to add some more decor such as a travel gallery wall of places we have lived or traveled to, some wallpaper, and maybe giving the office a bit of a painting facelift. I’m sure this space will shift and change as our family grows and evolves, but we truly love it right now!
